A rarely depicted subject. Our oil on panel depicts King Solomon receiving the Queen of Sheba, who had come to Jerusalem to test his wisdom and present him with numerous gifts.The king, seated on his throne in the center of the composition, welcomes the queen, accompanied by her large entourage. The queen, richly dressed, bowsbefore the sovereign while several servants present the gift sintended for Solomon. The scene unfolds against an imposing architectural backdrop brought to life by a multitude of figures—soldiers, courtiers,and servants. In the background, the presence of two giraffes, among the exotic animals accompanying the procession, underscores the distant and opulent naturea ttributed to the Kingdom of Sheba in the European imagination.
