The Tent of Darius – Tapestry from the Royal Aubusson Manufactory 18th

This tapestry from the Royal Aubusson Manufactory depicts *The Tent of Darius*, a famous episode from the history of Alexander the Great that took place after the Battle of Issus in 333 BC.

Following the Macedonian victory, the Persian King Darius III fled, abandoning his camp. Alexander then entered the royal tent, where he found Darius’s mother (Sisygambis), his wife (Stateira), their daughters, and the young crown prince. Mistaking Hephaestion for Alexander, Sisygambis prostrated herself before him. Upon realizing her error, she was overcome with shame. Alexander reassured her with a phrase that has since become famous: "You were not mistaken; he, too, is Alexander." He then ordered that the entire Persian royal family be treated with the respect due to their rank.

The composition features Alexander at the center, clad in armor and surrounded by his officers, receiving the women of the Persian court with dignity. The figures stand out against the backdrop of the lavish royal tent, where precious fabrics and ornaments evoke the splendor of the Achaemenid court.

Inspired by the accounts of Plutarch, Arrian, and Quintus Curtius, this subject was widely disseminated during the 17th and 18th centuries through the compositions of Charles Le Brun, First Painter to Louis XIV. The workshops of the Royal Aubusson Manufactory produced several versions of the scene, intended to celebrate the virtues of the victorious prince: clemency, magnanimity, and respect for the vanquished, alongside military glory. Through the quality of its design, the richness of its palette, and the fineness of its weave, this tapestry exemplifies the craftsmanship of the Aubusson workshops in the 18th century and stands as a remarkable testament to the fascination with great themes from Antiquity in the French decorative arts.
