Exceptional sculpture of Toba on his mule
Japan, Meiji Period (1868–1912)
Material: Cloisonné bronze (Shippo-yaki)
Dimensions:
Height: 38 cm
Width: 30 cm
Depth: 17 cm
Magnificent and rare Japanese cloisonné bronze sculpture depicting Toba riding his mule, one of the most iconic subjects in Japanese art inspired by the great sages of the Far East.
The figure is serenely represented seated on his mule, holding a scroll symbolizing knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual pursuit. His expressive face, long beard, and wide-brimmed hat convey the nobility and tranquility associated with this traditional figure.
The richness of the decoration is remarkable. Toba’s robe is entirely adorned with polychrome cloisonné decoration featuring scrolling patterns, flowers, and stylized clouds, executed in sumptuous shades of blue, turquoise, green, red, white, and gold. The mule is also fitted with finely decorated cloisonné harness elements, demonstrating the exceptional virtuosity of Japanese craftsmen during the Meiji period.
Cloisonné bronze, a particularly refined technique, consists of applying delicate metal wires onto the bronze surface to create compartments that are filled with colored enamels, followed by multiple firings and meticulous polishing. This demanding process requires extraordinary craftsmanship and gives the artwork its incomparable decorative richness.
With its impressive dimensions (38 cm high) and exceptional quality of execution, this sculpture represents a prestigious collector’s piece, highly sought after by enthusiasts of Japanese art and collectors of fine Meiji-period works.

Very good state of preservation, with a beautiful aged patina and remarkably fresh enamel decoration. No restoration reported.
