Beijing Workshop, China – Circa 1920
Material: Finely carved single-block ivory, presented on its original carved wooden stand.
Dimensions:
Total height with stand: 28 cm
Exceptional Chinese ivory sculpture carved from a single block of ivory, created around 1920 in the prestigious workshops of Beijing. The sculpture depicts an elderly fisherman, a traditional figure in Chinese culture symbolizing wisdom, patience, prosperity, and harmony with nature.
The figure is portrayed in a crouching position, holding a long bamboo fishing rod in his hand. A fish hangs from the top of the fishing line, while he presents another fish in his other hand, symbolizing abundance, success, and good fortune. Beside him rests a woven basket intended to collect his catch. His serene expression is masterfully rendered, with a finely carved long beard and remarkable facial realism.
The entire sculpture is carved from a single piece of ivory, including the base, basket, fishing rod, and fish, demonstrating exceptional technical mastery. Every detail reveals the extraordinary skill of the sculptor: the flowing folds of the garments, the texture of the bamboo, the scales of the fish, the woven basket, and the vegetation on the base are executed with remarkable precision.
The Beijing ivory carving workshops were among the most prestigious centers of ivory craftsmanship in China. Renowned for their exceptional technical virtuosity, these workshops produced works for the Imperial Court, high-ranking officials, and an elite clientele. Ivory sculptures from these ateliers are distinguished by their extraordinary finesse, delicate modeling, and rare quality of execution, making them highly sought-after by collectors of Asian art today.
This sculpture perfectly illustrates the excellence of Beijing workshops during the early 20th century. Through its harmonious proportions, refined carving, and richness of detail, it represents a museum-quality collector’s piece.
