Roger CAPRON (1922-2006),
Orangeade service "Valaque", circa 1955
A jug and 6 polychrome enameled ceramic cups with hand-painted decoration under glaze.
Dimensions:
Pitcher: H 25 x D 23 cm
Cup: H 11.5 x D 9 cm
Service with enameled ceramic orangeade consisting of a jug and six matching cups.
The decor is hand-painted in a palette dominated by ivory, orange red, yellow, turquoise blue and black tones. Each element is decorated with stylized characters wearing caps, shields and spears. The figures stand out against a light background and are treated according to a graphic vocabulary characterized by colored flat areas and strongly marked contours.
The pitcher has a curved body extended by a flared neck and a lateral handle.
The cups adopt a slightly truncated conical shape flared upwards.
The "Valaque" decor is among the most emblematic creations of Roger CAPRON during the first years of his activity in Vallauris. Appeared during the 1950s, it reflects the artist’s interest in popular traditions, folk tales and simplified forms of graphic expression that marked the revival of post-war decorative arts.
At that time, Roger CAPRON actively participated in the renaissance of French ceramics alongside the main actors of Vallauris. His work is distinguished by its ability to combine artistic exigency and domestic function, transforming everyday objects into supports for a true plastic creation.
The series "Valaque" holds a special place in this production. It belongs to the artist’s most spontaneous and narrative period, before the development of his major architectural programs and his research on geometric structures.
The compositions draw freely from an imaginary inspired by the traditional cultures of Central and Eastern Europe, reinterpreted in a resolutely modern language.
The complete services of this series appear less frequently on the market today than the isolated parts. Their interest lies as much in their decorative coherence as in their ability to illustrate one of the most appreciated periods of Roger CAPRON’s career.
