A large pair of Regency period gilt bronze wall sconces, each with a single light, adorned with a prominent female mascaron with an antique-style headdress featuring an inverted crescent moon. The hair is gathered beneath the face in a central knot, and the head rests on a scrolling, openwork bronze background surmounted by a pine cone, a very common symbol in the early 18th century. The central mascaron, with its expressive modeling, is delicately chased.
The scrolling stem, chased with acanthus leaves and foliage, unfurls in an elegant asymmetrical spiral characteristic of Regency period creations.
The chased candle holders rest on wide drip pans.
This pair is unique due to its size. This model is indeed a very fine example of Regency design. However, it was produced in smaller formats. Ours retains all the meticulous craftsmanship of the original in a more substantial size. A very fine piece of French Regency work, preserved in beautiful antique gilding.
Usual restoration and maintenance.
