"Virgin of the Milk" (Virgo Lactans)
Oil on copper with gold highlights
Venetian master
Early 17th century
Copper 14 x 18 cm
Original frame 18 x 22 cm
Architectural frame 34 x 74 cm
The painting is in excellent condition.
This small, exquisitely executed oil-on-copper gem depicts the Virgin holding the Child in her arms and offering him her breast to nurse.
The Child's face, in profile, is turned upward and meets the gaze of the Mother, who lowers her eyes in a tender, maternal embrace.
It is a particularly refined subject, highly evocative, and the image is very pleasing.
The artist is a 17th-century Venetian artist influenced by Flemish painting.
The copper plate, including its original thin frame, has been inserted into a magnificent aedicule with a markedly architectural line, creating the effect of a splendid miniature altarpiece.
In addition to enhancing the painting's importance, this rare gilded and silvered wooden altarpiece adds considerable value, perfectly integrating into a fusion of two Venetian works of art from the same period.
