Arm Holding a Shield
Spain, 17th century
Wood
18 × 47 × 15 cm
This fragment depicts a right arm holding a shield, probably originating from a carved figure of a knight in polychromed wood. Detached from its original body, the fragment acquires a singular presence: reduced to this isolated gesture, it takes on an almost surreal quality.
The elongated fingers grip the shield firmly. The treatment of the volumes and the amplitude of the gesture suggest that it once belonged to a large-scale sculpture.
The work belongs to the tradition of 17th-century Spanish Baroque sculpture. It may be associated with Castilian or Andalusian workshops, both particularly active in the production of polychromed wooden sculpture during this period.
