Wig box in blue Martin varnish, Paris circa 1730

An elegant rectangular box opening with a domed lid. It features a beautiful chinoiserie decoration in engraved gold leaf on a blue varnish ground; the lid depicts a garden landscape with rocks, pavilions, and a gardener in traditional dress, while the body of the box is decorated with floral spandrels.
The interior is finished in vermilion lacquer.

Parisian work, probably by the workshop of the brothers Etienne and Guillaume Martin, circa 1730.
