Pair of gouaches depicting "The Pilgrims of Emmäus", and "The Flight into Egypt". - "The Flight into Egypt" is an episode recounted in Matthew's Gospel ( 2; 13-23). It is a major theme in Christian art. Following Herod's massacre of the Innocents, the Holy Family fled to Egypt before settling in Nazareth in Galilee. On leaving Bethlehem, Mary is said to have sat down to rest. The place was venerated as the Kathisma, Mary's seat. A Byzantine church was built here, the ruins of which remain. - "The pilgrims of Emmäus" are two characters recounted in the Gospel of Luke (24; 13-35). Jesus Christ, who had just risen from the dead on Easter morning after his crucifixion, appeared on the road to Emmäus, a village near Jerusalem, to two disciples fleeing the holy city, scarred by his death. They offered him hospitality without recognizing him. "He took the bread, pronounced the blessing and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him.... It's the Lord!" Good state of preservation; a former attempt was made to enlarge the original format, perhaps to put them in their current carved and gilded wooden frames.
Marouflaged on cardboard 40.5 x 34 with frames.
