Oil on canvas, 32 x 45 cm; with its 18th-century frame: 44 x 58 cm.
This elegant coastal view depicts Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, one of the most picturesque ports on the Picardy coast, captured in a serene and luminous atmosphere. The composition is structured around the estuary, whose calm waters reflect a clear sky animated by light clouds. On the shore, a few figures—fishermen, walkers, or boatmen—subtly enliven the scene and enhance the impression of everyday life.
The brushwork is precise and controlled, demonstrating a keen sense of topographical and atmospheric detail. The soft tonalities, subtle gradations of the sky, and clarity of drawing strongly evoke the manner of Jacob Philipp Hackert, a painter renowned for his coastal landscapes and harbour views.
Hackert, a German painter active in Italy and France, was one of the leading European landscape artists of the late 18th century.
His reputation was based on:
meticulous observation of nature,
faithful topography,
clear and structured light,
balanced compositions, often animated by small figures.
The present work reflects several of these characteristics: precision of line, highly controlled atmospheric rendering, a luminous palette, and a clear interest in maritime landscapes and ports.
Although Hackert did not spend extended periods in Picardy, he produced numerous views of French ports, often based on preparatory drawings or aristocratic commissions. The quality of execution and the overall spirit of the composition support a plausible attribution to his hand or to his circle.
