This monumental carpet is a masterpiece of 19th-century French décor. Representing the pinnacle of the Napoleon III style, it testifies to the excellence and refinement of the Aubusson Manufactory, then serving the grandest European residences.
Aesthetic Analysis
Central Medallion: The heart of the carpet features a polylobed medallion on a cream background, framing an opulent floral bouquet. This center is encircled by a wide wreath of pastel-toned flowers, creating a striking contrast with the burgundy field.
The Field: A rich background of a muted purple (or burgundy) beautifully highlights the floral motifs and brings immediate warmth to the room.
The Border: A triple border frames the entire design. It features a frieze of stylized acanthus leaves in grisaille, followed by a magnificent outer border adorned with rocaille cartouches and cascading roses at the four corners.
