cupid The Blacksmith - Empire Period Patinated And Fire-gilded Bronze Clock

A finely gilded bronze Empire period portico clock, surmounted by a sculpted group depicting Cupid as a blacksmith, a refined allegorical subject characteristic of early 19th-century French taste. The architectural structure is supported by faun caryatids, lending the whole a sense of balance and sculptural presence. The enamel dial, signed Chevallier à Paris, identifies the Parisian clockmaker, while the bronze model is attributed to the bronzier Jean-Simon Deverberie, a major figure in the production of art bronzes during the Empire period. The quality of the casting, the fineness of the chasing, and the harmonious proportions testify to first-rate Parisian craftsmanship. The clock is preserved in very fine original condition, with its richly preserved gilding. Dimensions: 32 × 55 (H) × 11 cm.
