An exceptional Empire mantel clock signed Deverberie et Cie, Rue Barbette, Paris, dating from the early 19th century.
This remarkable composition depicts Venus seated in an elegant chariot gliding through the clouds, accompanied by three Cupids. One gently pushes the chariot forward, another guides the reins of the doves, while the third triumphantly raises a delicate butterfly.
The clock is centered around a spectacular deep cobalt-blue enamel dial featuring an extraordinary pierced gold butterfly, which serves as the indicator of time. This highly unusual design is one of the most captivating and poetic dial concepts of the French Empire period.
Executed in finely chased and mercury-gilt bronze, every detail—from the expressive figures to the flowing clouds and beautifully modelled doves—demonstrates the exceptional artistry for which Deverberie (1764-1824) became renowned.
A rare and highly collectible masterpiece of French Empire decorative arts.
Dimensions: 57 × 41 × 17 cm.
