Globe Terrestrial C. Abel Klinger, Nuremberg - J.A Bühler Circa. 1848-1855

Institut Artistique, Nuremberg – J. A. Bühler
Circa 1848–1855

Important mid-19th-century terrestrial globe, produced in Nuremberg by C. Abel Klinger, published by the Institut Artistique, and manufactured by J. A. Bühler, a well-known figure in German globe production of this period.

The globe is composed of engraved paper gores applied to a papier-mâché sphere and retaining its original hand coloring. The cartography is in French and reflects the geographical knowledge of the mid-19th century, with characteristic toponyms such as “Amérique Septentrionale,” “Golfe du Mexique,” and “Mer des Antilles.”

It is mounted on a turned wooden tripod base and fitted with a metal meridian ring. The sphere is set within an octagonal engraved horizon ring, decorated with hour indications, zodiac signs, and cardinal directions.

The object displays an overall aged patina with visible signs of use, including surface wear, rubbing, and minor alterations consistent with its age and historical use.
There is also a tear in the paper of the globe, which does not affect overall legibility or structural stability.

This globe represents a fine example of 19th-century German scientific and educational globe production, sought after by collectors of antique globes and scientific instruments.
