French Elegance and Craftsmanship
This fall-front desk, designed at desk height with chamfered corners, features exquisite rosewood and amaranth veneers, accented by double Greek key inlays. The drop-front with a green leather opens to reveal a meticulously fitted interior, complemented by a lower door. The keyholes, escutcheons, apron, and finials—crafted in chased and gilded bronze—add a refined touch. The white Carrara marble top, framed by an openwork gallery, completes this exceptional piece.
Dating to circa 1780, this secretary exemplifies the mastery of French cabinetmaking during the Louis XVI period. Intended for writing and document storage, such pieces reflected the prestige of their owners—whether bourgeois or aristocratic—and were prominently displayed in salons or private studies.
