This painting, dated 1894, depicts the wives of sailors from Pollet—known as the “Polletaises”—waiting for the fishing boats to return. With baskets on their backs, they would carry the fish to market to sell. This rare subject in the work of Léon-Jules Lemaître is represented among the three paintings by the artist held at the Dieppe Museum: “Dieppe, Saint-Jacques Church,” “Place Nationale in Dieppe,” and “Quai Duquesne in Dieppe.”
