Circle of Marcantonio Franceschini (Bologna, 1648 - 1729)
Diana and Endymion
Oil on canvas, cm 101x142,5
cm 128 x 170 framed
The painting is in a good condition and has a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The painting depicts the goddess Diana, identified by the crescent moon on her head and her bow and quiver, who, accompanied by two of her dogs, watches her beloved Endymion sleeping in a clearing. In the background, a small lake with several cherubs can be glimpsed. The subject was particularly popular between the 16th and 17th centuries, and its connection with the themes of sleep and love made it particularly appreciated for placement in private contexts, especially bedrooms. The painting bears similarities to the style of the Bolognese painter Maracantonio Franceschini, one of the most important exponents of Emilian Baroque classicism.
