Two Kitsune - Japan, late Edo 1800-1850

Look at that grin! These foxes (kitsune) are sacred intermediaries between the divine and the human: they are thought to be messengers of Inari, the Shinto God of rice. They are worshipped all over Japan, especially in rural areas (and in the South of Kyoto with the centuries old sake breweries and the famous shrine of Fushimi Inari). There is obviously a good reason to associate foxes with rice harvest as these mammals would hunt down the rodents in the rice fields and thus play a decisive role for a good harvest.
