An extraordinary example of 19th-century Dutch silversmithing, this solid silver lidded trophy or centerpiece was crafted by the renowned firm Van Kempen & Zonen of Voorschoten, Holland. Known for their exceptional craftsmanship and richly detailed decorative work, Van Kempen produced some of the finest silver pieces.
J.M. van Kempen (1814–1877) Royal Dutch Factory for Gold and Silver Works, Voorschoten Johannes Mattheus van Kempen was a pioneering 19th-century Dutch silversmith who introduced industrial production methods to traditional silver craftsmanship. His factory in Voorschoten, granted the title “Royal” in 1858, became renowned for its refined silverware and elegant designs in Greek, Gothic, Renaissance, and later Art Nouveau styles. Collaborating with leading artists such as Gerardus Willem van Dokkum and Hendrik Jacobus Valk, Van Kempen elevated Dutch silver to international prominence. Many of Van Kempen’s masterpieces are now housed in major museums, including the Rijksmuseum and Museum Het Valkhof, as icons of Dutch decorative art.
