Marble head in the round depicting a putto, Roman Baroque, 17th century.
In the Baroque period, putti became predominant decorative elements, depicted as naked, winged children, often with an allegorical or symbolic role. Derived from Greco-Roman Eros, in the Baroque period they took on different meanings, from joyful spirits to symbols of love, used both in sacred contexts such as church and altar decorations, and in secular contexts on furniture, silverware, and ceramics.
Our head, of beautiful size, is harmonious and well-proportioned. Time has left its mark, but its beauty remains intact.
