L'effroi - Ceramic piece by Jean Mayodon (1863-1967) after Emile-Antoine Bourdelle

L'effroi (Fear), a ceramic piece by Jean Mayodon based on Emile-Antoine Bourdelle.

Jean Mayodon (1863-1967) was a ceramist and painter from Sèvres, where he worked throughout his life in his studio. He became artistic advisor and then director of the Manufacture.
He produced numerous vases, as well as larger pieces. His work drew heavily on ancient art, with mermaids, tritons, and centaurs appearing in bright colors, often against gold backgrounds, which characterized Jean Mayodon's work.
The work we are presenting is a direct tribute to Bourdelle, a sculptor who had a lasting influence on subsequent generations. L'effroi (Fear) is part of the Monument aux morts de la guerre de 1870 (War Memorial) in Montauban, some of whose pieces Bourdelle exhibited as works in their own right.
In this studio work, we find the enameling and gold background so characteristic of Jean Mayodon.
