Probably Upper Rhine, around 1530
A Christ on the Cross, inventory number SP.418, is preserved in the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar. It had been buried under the Dominican Church in Colmar during the French Revolution and was later rediscovered in the basement. The head of this sculpture shows a particular similarity in the treatment of the physiognomy, hair, and overall expression to the head offered here, which comes from a South German collection. It is executed in sandstone, with the gaze directed downward and forward, visibly contorted in pain.
