Description:
Bronze with a honey-brown patina.
This writing desk consists of a triangular base supported by three stylized lions.
The base has a rim decorated with a frieze of ovals and moldings and supports a thick, round base adorned with a frieze of interlacing and plant and geometric decorations.
In the center of the usual bowls, a kneeling satyr holds the toilet bowl.
The bronze has a honey-brown patina typical of the period.
Originally, representations of satyrs carrying a torch, holding a votive statuette of an emperor, etc., were found elsewhere.
The statue of the kneeling satyr is here rendered as a light holder, inspired by purely statuary models.
The Louvre has a model in the same style. Our writing desk was probably made by Severo da Ravenna around 1480 or 1520.
