This elegant cup and saucer is decorated with a rare fond porphyre—a high-fired mottled red glaze imitating ancient porphyry stone, popular at Sèvres in the late 1790s. The surface is enriched with delicate gilt craquelure that enhances its classical texture.
The piece is further adorned with “Etruscan rosettes” and color bands in red, blue, and green, exemplifying the refined symmetry and ornamentation of late Neoclassical design.
According to factory sales records from 1797, this decoration type was listed as Porphyre et rosettes étrusques. Comparable pieces are held in the MFA Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
