Exceptional romanesque sculpture with a museum provenance prior to 1940 (cf. below).
Hieratic sculpture of a male head. Marble, eyes encrusted with lead. Probably from the tomb of a very important political and/or military person. Mediterranean region (southern Italy) ca. 1100-1150. Wear and chipping to the nose and the chin. Otherwise good condition (cracks but unbroken). On a wooden stand. Dimensions (without stand): 21x15x13cm.Our head bears some resemblance to a crowned marble head of a woman with lead encrusted eyes from southern Italy, dated circa 1270 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (47.100.53a).

Collection Musée Barbier-Mueller (Geneva, Switzerland), acquired by Josef Mueller before 1940.
