Our painting precisely describes the episode that gave birth to the "Judgment of Paris":
At the wedding of Peleus and Thetis on Mount Olympus, all the gods are invited except Eris, goddess of Discord. In revenge, Eris throws a golden apple with the inscription "For the fairest": the Apple of Discord.
Three goddesses then claim the fruit: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Then, Paris, on Mount Ida, designates Aphrodite as the winner (see Wikipedia).
Our painting, painted in Titian's late style, from the late 16th to early 17th century, is relined and has some restorations. ( Ref. Cabinet Turquin- Paris)
Its carved wooden frame appears to be original 17th century.
