Oil on canvas from the early 17th-century Flemish-romantic
school. The naked child is seated on the base of a column; a blue cloth is spread over it to protect him from the cold of the stone. His right arm rests nonchalantly
on an hourglass, a branch rests on the hollow of his shoulder, and his right foot rests on a skull. With his left arm outstretched, he recalls the “Memento Mori”, “Remember that you are dying”. The child embodies the theme of “Vanitas”, or rather of the transience and fragility of human things, where early childhood and death meet in the rapid passage of time underlined by the hourglass. This oil painting has been restored for use and maintenance, such as
cleaning and refreshing old restorations. It is set in
a neoclassical gilded wood frame from the Louis XVI period. Dimensions:
to frame 56.8cm high by 47.5cm high.
This work can be compared with the Frans Floris work in the National Museum, Stockholm.
Frans Floris Antwerp 1519-1570 was a romantic Flemish history painter
of the Antwerp school, from a large family of artists.
