Tanuki, Japan end of 19th century

Fabulous Tanuki or raccoon dog in heavy Japanese wood (probably black pine). In popular Japanese tales, the tanuki is notorious especially for mischievous behavior and oversized testicles. Masterful harmony between nature and sculptor: the movement of the wood captures the movement of the tanuki. Beautifully weathered, exquisite losses (tip of legs, hole in the back …) and a rusty nail in its muzzle. Meiji. Wabisabi masterpiece.
Dimensions: 32x16x15cm.
