Empire Mantel Clock “Diana and Callisto” – Alexandre à Paris, circa 1810

An exquisite French Empire gilt bronze mantel clock, attributed to the Parisian clockmaker Alexandre à Paris, circa 1810. The composition features a finely cast allegorical group representing Diana and Callisto, drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Seated above the enamel dial, the goddess Diana is depicted in a moment of intimate discovery, as she unveils Callisto’s hidden pregnancy — a subject rich in classical symbolism.

The clock is adorned with neoclassical ornamentation: two majestic sphinxes flank the dial, embodying enigma and wisdom; detailed acanthus and palmette motifs highlight the architectural structure; and a draped curtain frieze evokes aristocratic interiors of the early 19th century. The white enamel dial with Roman numerals is signed “Alexandre à Paris” and retains its original Breguet-style hands.

A museum-quality piece that captures the Empire era’s fascination with antiquity, mythology, and imperial grandeur.
