Biography
Born in Rouen on 29 November 1738, he entered the Rouen School of Drawing at the age of twelve, founded by Jean-Baptiste Descamps (1706 - 1791) in 1750, which provided him with a solid technical training.
He was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture on 29 July 1780, and was accepted as a history painter on 28 May 1785. He regularly took part in the Salons from 1781 to 1817, exhibiting paintings and especially drawings. He was honoured with several royal commissions during the reigns of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, as well as during the Revolution.
