The painting depicts a sumptuous floral arrangement that gracefully combines floral and sculptural elements in a perfect synthesis: the scene is dominated, on the right, by a large stone vase carved with Baroque-style scrollwork, holding a rich garland that wraps around it.
Between the base and the architectural pedestal on which the vase stands lie other lavish bouquets of cut flowers, including white and pink roses, anemones, carnations, and small wildflowers.
At the bottom left is a cluster of other flowers and another large terracotta vase in which pink carnations bloom luxuriantly.
The work is attributed—by Dr. Cifani in her critical study—to the painter Pietro Francesco Gambone (Turin, c. 1682–1737), one of the leading figures in early 18th-century Piedmontese still life painting, who was highly regarded and in great demand by the nobility and the Savoy court of the time to decorate the grand reception halls.
Pietro Francesco, in fact, devoted himself to painting interiors both at the Royal Palace of Turin and for other important Savoy residences.
The outdoor setting, suggested by the dimly lit architectural backdrops on the right and the vegetation in the background, evokes the typical style of stately gardens of the era, where nature and the man-made coexisted in sophisticated harmony.
As we can appreciate in this work, the painter is distinguished by a soft, fluid brushstroke, and although he worked in the height of the 18th century (the era of Rococo and Savoyard Classicism), he maintained an aesthetic linked to the grandeur of the previous century.
The large flower corollas appear lush and, at times, slightly wilted—a typical device of the Baroque genre used to evoke the theme of vanitas and the transience of beauty.
