17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
A rare and very beautiful alabaster group depicting Saint Anne the Educator, sculpted in the round with gilt and polychrome highlights from the 16th century.
This statuette is part of the series of traditional images produced in the workshops of the Sicilian city of Trapani, which dedicated themselves to the production of devotional sculptures for private and public use from the 14th to the 18th centuries, using alabaster from local quarries.
It demonstrates great elegance in its execution, both in the refined treatment of the drapes with their wide, flowing folds, and in the graceful gestures of Saint Anne, whose right arm lovingly embraces Mary's shoulders.
The smiling faces of the Saint and the young Mary add to the charm of this sculpture, which cannot fail to touch us.
