Biography :
David Nightingale Hicks (1929-1998) began his career as a decorator in 1954 after the publication of his mother's house in London which he had decorated in House & Garden magazine. He was the decorator for the aristocracy and high society of the 60s and 70s: Earl Mountbatten, Helena Rubinstein or Douglas Fairbanks Jr., as well as for the English monarchy: he made carpets for Windsor Castle and decorated the first apartment of the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace.
He also created elements for film sets, such as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. His work was a fusion of classical and modern style, marked by a use of bold colors and geometric patterns.
