French school of the 19th century. Venice, view of the Doge's Palace

Felix Ziem (1821-1911) workshop. View of Venice, the Doge's Palace and the columns of the Piazetta.

Oil on canvas 55.5 cm by 38.5 cm
Old frame of 69 cm by 52 cm

This very beautiful, superbly framed painting, formerly attributed to Félix Ziem, is most certainly the work of a painter from his circle. We can cite in particular Charles Clément Calderon (1870-1906). It may also be by the hand of one of his many students. Indeed, if our work is close to Ziem and Calderon, it presents some originalities compared to the usual work of these two painters. For example, the windows of the Doge's Palace on the Piazetta side are not painted as usual. Ziem painted this view from this angle, on numerous occasions, these paintings enjoyed considerable success like all the others he was able to create on the Serenissima. His production was plethoric, in fact it is estimated that 10,000 were the number of his achievements throughout his long career. He has of course inspired many painters.
