Charles van den Eycken (1859-1923), known as Duchêne, was a well-known Belgian painter specialising in paintings of cats.
His grandfather Frans was a decorative painter and his father, also called Charles, a successful painter of landscapes in the 17th century Dutch style.

He studied first with his father and then with Joseph Stevens, a realistic animal painter, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. Later he also studied at the Academy of Leuven. From 1881 onwards he exhibited regularly at the Brussels, Liege, Ghent and Antwerp Salons, as well as in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. He painted several pictures for Queen Marie-Henriette of Belgium.
