Weeping Mary Magdalene, Brabant 16th century

A rare retable fragment of a woman with her arms in the air in a dramatic gesture of grief and despair. She is most probably Mary Magdalene besides the body of Christ. Remains of gilt on her dress. Carved in one massive piece of oak including the sturdy base. Wear (on face), losses (arms). Brabant, ca 1500.
Dimensions: 45 cm.
Provenance: Phillips Son & Neal Auction House 1970’s hence Edric Van Vredenburgh collection.
