Large Kashan Pottery Bowl / Plate - Persia 12th-13th Century

Large size with straight flared sides and iridescent turquoise glaze and 3 points of support in the centre. Controlled glaze around the exterior, unglazed recessed base. This item is accompanied by its Thermoluminescence test that confirms its age (QED2124/BI-0501).
Kashan was a Persian city known for producing high-quality pottery during the medieval period. The town was well-located, near sources of minerals needed to create their distinctive light-colored stone pastes.
Copper oxide is one of the cheapest raw materials used to color glazes and also one of the most widespread. When copper oxide is used in a lead glaze, it turns a lush, grass-green color, while it becomes more turquoise in an alkaline glaze.
Alkaline glazes, perhaps best known for producing the classic Egyptian turquoise color, date back thousands of years and were found in Persia, China, and Mesopotamia. The alkaline glazes’ strengths are their ability to produce brilliant, clear colors at earthenware temperatures without the assistance of lead.
Diameter: 37,5 cm.
