The Deploration of Christ, oil French school of the 17th Century.

The Deploration of Christ, oil on copper panel in a gilded and carved limewood Berain frame. The Deploration of Christ or Lamentation of Christ is an episode that marks the final moment of the Passion of Christ (Dies Passionis Domini). The livid body of Christ, lying down, is surrounded by his relatives, who lament his death. The body of Christ, in the foreground, is lying on a white shroud, which catches the light. The faces are particularly neat, and each one evokes his suffering in a particular way. The Virgin, draped in a magnificent blue cloak, questions the sky, while Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, about to cover Christ's body with a blood-red sheet, pay him a final tribute. Both show closed faces and features drawn by pain. In the foreground the copper basin and the three nails used for his crucifixion. A great dramatic intensity emerges from this work which preludes the burial.
Dimension: Copier 22.2cm high, 16.7cm wide. Frame 30.9cm high, 24.4cm wide.
