These sheets are extracted from the monumental collection of ancient objects and sculptures drawn from the recent archaeological discoveries made during the second half of the eighteenth century. These objects belonged to rich British collectors for the most part and Piranesi selected them for their spectacular appearance while adding for each of his drawings a legend specifying the origin and location of the objects.
