A Louis XVI Portrait, The Young Woman With The Holy Spirit Dove

Louis XVI period portrait, The Young Woman with the Holy Spirit Dove.
Oil on canvas from the second half of the 18th century, around 1770 - 1780.
Portrait of a young woman with light brown hair, dressed in a light blue dress called "à l'anglaise" matching her eyes, accompanied by a transparent shawl of white lace, tied with a large ribbon on her bodice. This one is wearing a headdress of the same quality and a gold pendant in the shape of a dove of the Holy Spirit topped by a knot on a velvet cord matching her bracelet. She is represented in a bust, three quarters turned slightly to the right, her face facing the viewer. The quality of the headdress and shawl, the pendant with the dove of the Holy Spirit, the wedding ring and the gold ring set with diamonds, as well as her English-style dress, allow us to determine the social class of the subject as well as the dating of this painting. A young bride from the provincial nobility during the second half of the century around 1770 - 1780. The pendant to the Holy Spirit symbol of fertility is always composed of a dove presented upside down, wings spread. Generally speaking in the history of art, the dove descending from the sky to the earth represents the divine word. The dove has a prominent place in Christian iconography since the Middle Ages. In addition, our bride is dressed in a dress called English accompanied by a corset, a real feminist revolution for the time. Indeed, the sacrosanct body with whales, so much favored by the etiquette, is shattered. It was replaced in all social categories by the corset, more flexible, which was already worn by the women of the people. A philosophical and medical debate is launched about this piece of clothing essential to the maintenance of this fragile being that is the woman, subject which will not fail to make flow much ink during the following century. It should be noted that the canvas has been cleaned and that a small restoration is present at the bottom right at the end of the elbow in the dark part.
Dimensions: Height 76.5cm, Width 64cm.
