Henri Gascar, born in Paris in 1635, was a great success as a portrait painter through the European royal courts and more particularly in the service of Charles II king of England; he must leave this country during the glorious revolution that brought about the fall of King James II and his wife Marie Beatrice; elected member of royal academy by Louis XIV,
he leaves then continues his career in Italy.

Our large format painting is very representative of the style of Henri Gascar, it introduces a large amount of objects, flowers and drapery in the decor that have earned him success with the English nobility accustomed to decorations more austere.

Henri Gascar painted around 1660 the full portrait of the Duke of York, we can think that he painted our portrait in this year.
