Bischop’s head, Central France 14th century

Rare and early fragment in finely grained limestone (tufa) with typical creamy yellowish colour. Very austere style, typical for early sculpture. Damaged left eye but beautiful remains of right corner of the lips, which gives it a mysterious smile. It was displayed in a niche, hence the backside is left rather plain. Remains of pinkish red original polychromy.
Dimensions (without stand): heigth 29 x width 17 x depth 14 cm.
Heigth with stand: 37cm.
