Three heads of dragonlike monsters, eyes popping out of their sockets, tongues or liquid oozing out of their mouths. A fantastic and rare piece of romanesque bestiary. Weathered limestone. Probably France, 13th century or older (there are remains of a Latin inscription on the back but it is so weathered that it is impossible to decipher). Could it refer to multiheaded Hydra of Lerna (slain by Hercules)? Could it be the three headed Cerberus, guardian dog of the underworld? Could it refer to the six headed monster Scylla, feeding on seamen that it snatched from the deck of ships as told by Homerus in the Odysseus? Or could it refer to the vehicle of the Whore of Babylon, riding on the seven headed beast to announce the Apocalypse as written in the ‘Book of Revelations’?
Whatever hellish creature it refers to, this sure is a hell of a stone!
Weathered, chipped yet unbroken.
A big stone: 80x54x33cm. Weight: approximately 130 kg. On an iron stand.
