Bacchanal religious festival celebrated in ancient times.
Linked to the Dyonisiac mysteries, they stood in honor of Bacchus, Roman god of fury, drunkenness, and overflowing, especially sexual.

Terracotta signed at the back "CLODION"

Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was born in Nancy in 1738. In 1755, he joined J.B.Pigalle's studio.
Grand Prix sculpture of the Royal Academy in 1761, he died in 1814.
He is known for his mythological groups of dancers, nymphs, terracotta bathers.
Museums: Agen, Nancy, Louvre, Rouen, Versailles.
