This finely carved marble bust of Saint John the Baptist evokes the expressive grace and sculptural language of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680). Depicted as a youthful figure, the saint turns his head gently to one side, his lifted gaze and slightly parted lips lending his features an air of contemplation. The softly rounded cheeks, delicate modelling of the mouth and flowing curls combine to create a presence that is at once idealised and animated.
Particularly striking is the contrast between the smoothly polished flesh and the richly worked hair. Deeply carved locks frame the face and fall around the neck, their undulating forms creating alternating passages of light and shadow. The subtle transitions across the cheeks, eyelids and throat reveal a sensitive handling of the marble, while the folds of drapery introduce movement across the shoulders and chest. A socle in Rosso di Verona marble provides a warm chromatic counterpoint to the pale stone of the bust.
These affinities suggest a sculptor conversant with the artistic vocabulary of Roman Baroque sculpture and the considerable influence of Bernini. Although a specific attribution cannot be established on stylistic grounds alone, the assured carving and refined treatment of the features make it plausible that the bust was executed by a talented sculptor working within his circle or in the wider tradition shaped by his example.
