Paintings, sculptures and art objects from the 15th to the 17th century
Gilt copper and semi-precious stone cabochons (garnets). On the front, Christ is shown crowned, wearing the long perizonium typical of the 14th century. Around ten cabochons.
The reverse of the cross is set with eleven stone cabochons; its engraved central section depicts Christ in a mandorla, giving a blessing and holding an orb in his left hand. At the four terminals are the tetramorph of the Evangelists: the eagle for John at the top, the angel for Matthew at the bottom, Luke with his ox on the right, and the lion for Mark on the left.
Altar crosses of this kind adorned the wealthy monasteries of Italy in the Middle Ages. Our piece retains its original gilding, with signs of wear.
Works of this type are also found in France and in the Mosan region.
A similar piece is held in the treasury of the Abbey of Monte Cassino, Italy.
