Rectangular oil on canvas; portrait of Marquis Pierre-Paul-Joseph de Ribouton. The Marquis de Ribouton is depicted in a bust portrait, turned slightly to the right, facing the viewer. His attire allows us to place him socially within the upper echelons of the Comtadine nobility. He is dressed in a very fitted black velvet jacket embellished with gray clasps, the whole ensemble draped with a purple cape, a symbol of the Representative Assembly of the Comtat Venaissin. His posture and facial expression reveal more about his character traits—wise and authoritative. His face has a complexion lightened by milky powder, with deep, almond-shaped, blue-gray eyes, a broad nose, a thin mouth, a high forehead, and a rounded chin. His features are accentuated by a perfectly powdered wig that is as austere as it is severe. An officer in Louis XVI’s bodyguard, he defended the royal family during the events of October 5 and 6, 1789. He served as a member of the Representative Assembly of the Comtat Venaissin in 1790. He left in 1791 before the annexation of the Comtat Venaissin. He took part in the royalist uprising on 13 Vendémiaire, Year IV (October 1795). He was labeled an émigré and struck from the rolls on 8 Floréal, Year V (April 1797).
