17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
This lovely statue depicts a female saint standing in a natural pose.
She likely bears the iconographic attributes of Saint Agnes: the martyr's palm, the Book, and the long hair that preserved her modesty by enveloping her and shielding her from the gaze of her executioners.
The lamb—which would have allowed for a more definitive identification—was originally positioned at her feet.
As with many youthful figures of the period, her wavy hair is not concealed by a veil, and the rounded neckline of her gown leaves her neck fully exposed.
The sculptor also paid close attention to anatomical details, revealing the curve of her bosom, the delicacy of her hands, and the waves of her long hair cascading down her shoulders and reaching the small of her back.
The young martyr is dressed in a gown with flowing drapery that falls in sharp, angular folds at the front.
This sculpture exemplifies the grace of late 15th-century Flemish artistry, offering a composition that balances serene character with emotional intensity.
