18th C. Neoclassical Marquetry Commode, Workshop of Maggiolini

This Neoclassical marquetry commode is an outstanding example of late 18th-century Milanese cabinetmaking (circa 1790). The exquisite piece is attributed to the immediate circle or workshop of the renowned Italian master Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738–1814), with the intricate marquetry designs based on Levanti. The architecturally rigorous front features three drawers—a narrow frieze drawer and two deep main drawers sans traverse—centered by a monumental medallion depicting a finely shaded floral rosette. The medallion is framed by strict geometric bands and mirrored veneers of contrasting precious woods, including rosewood, walnut, maple, and fruitwood. The top frieze is adorned with a rhythmic band of delicate acanthus leaves, while the chamfered corners feature elegant cascading floral garlands. The piece rests on four elegant tapering square legs terminating in fine gilt bronze sabots and is topped with its original profiled Carrara marble. Retaining its original ring handles and escutcheons, the commode is in excellent, freshly restored condition with a hand-applied shellac polish.
